This is making me crazy. This thing is called a chapel. When I look that up in the dictionary I see:

chap·el/?CHap?l/
Noun:
A small building for Christian worship, typically one attached to an institution or private house.
Regular services held in such a building.

I just sent a message to my supervisor, Gerry Broderick, with copies to several other supervisors and, most importantly, to Annie Laurie Gaylor at FFRF. This seems like a direct violation to me and I'd imagine FFRF will have a thing or two to say on the subject.

Just a quick update to all. I did contact our Village Manager and Village President. I got a quick response from the Village Manager apologizing. He was completely aware of the laws and said he was sorry for not caching it. He promised to make sure it would not happen again. In his very professional and polite response he copied the Village President and an attorney. I was actually flattered at the response. Needless to say I am proud of my community. I responded in kind with a polite thank you. The moral of this story is quite simply that it pays to complain - and complain properly to the right people. Order has been restored in my local universe.

It was a unanimous vote, 19-0 in favor of the chapel proposal. I don't know if Marvin Pratt OK'd the proposal. He was the interim County Exec. If he did, it's a done-deal; if not, Chris Abele gets sworn in Monday, April 25. He could of course sign it, but if he gets enough e-mails pointing out the legality issues with subsidizing a chapel-- he might, hopefully, delay signing and seek a more complete legal review. Look at the Milwaukee County web site to find his e-mail address. It was not there yet, but it will probably be updated Monday.

Well, it happened! We are going to get a chapel at the airport. Below is the response I received from Supervisor Rice - not exactly what I had hoped for.

Dear Mr. Bocksenbaum:

Thank you for your note regarding the proposed Interfaith Chapel at the General Mitchell International Airport. The Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors today voted unanimously (18-0) to approve the installation of the facility. I voted in favor of the measure as Interfaith has committed to raise necessary rental, construction and maintenance funds entirely from private sources and the group will be issued a licence to construct the facility under standard terms and conditions for similar type of terminal building space development. The proposed design is contemporary with no decor representing any particular faith.

Once more, thank you for contacting my office and please do not hesitate to do so in the future regarding this or any other issue concerning Milwaukee County

Joseph A. Rice
Milwaukee County Supervisor

Hi Ben. Thank you for your interest in SWiFT. These are about 25-30 current due paying members and many more friends that come to meetings and events.

The membership fee helps to pay for some of our administrative services like maintaining the website and producing literature and fliers. We also donate some money to national organizations we support like the Secular Coalition for America.

To see what SWiFT is about, please read the "About" page on this website - or better yet, come to one of our meetings.

This site is awesome! Somehow I missed it. I've added it to our "links" list. When I first started reading their forum I was getting upset at the obtuse questions that were being asked. Then realizing it was a spoof, I actually laughed out loud. The sad thing is there really are a lot of ignorant, dogmatic theists that would ask those questions.
